Michiko:  Very interesting.  Thank you so much for the information!  I will pass this onto my friend.  See everyone I told this website is very informative.  Not only do we have great people who are members and their Doodles, but we have many people from different cultures that are able to educate us in other ways.

O.K.  Dennis - cute comment.  Now you sound like Bruce!

Hi  Grace,

It "KOINOBORI" to be very famous in Japanese "Wind Sock".
Is the thing which you have this?
(please refer to a photograph and explanation)

Kodomo-no-hi is Children's Day. It is celebrated on May 5. Kodomo-no-hi was
established by the National Holidays Law, which was enforced in1948.
Kodomo-no-hi is one of the holidays which make up Golden Week.

Until after World WarII, Kodomo-no-hi was called "Tango-no-sekku", Boys'
festival. This day was celebrated in order to wish the healthy growth of the
boys in the family. Koinobori (carp streamers) ,the symbol of strength and
courage, were flown outside and miniature suits of armor were displayed
inside the house in hope of healthy growth of the boys.

Celebrating Tango-no-sekku still remains, but Children's Day is celebrated
in hope of healthy growth, happiness, and prosperity of both boys and girls.

Koinobori are cloth streamers in the shape of a carp which are flown on a
tall pole on Children's day.

Carp are believed to be fish capable of climbing up stream against rapid
currents and overcoming all manner of obstacles. Therefore, carp are taken
as a symbol of the strength, courage and patience to accomplish major goals.

In Japan, we have custom of hanging out carp streamers on Children's Day to
pray that boys in the house will take after carp and live their lives
strongly.

Oh so precious!  Sweet Shaggy!  Oh Michiko I was talking to a friend yesterday and we have been having rain all week, as a matter of fact a tornado touched down west of the Ft. Lauderdale area last night and destoyed several homes. No one was hurt!   Anyway, my friend mentioned if we get a "Wind Sock" will that stop the rain?  I told him I wasn't sure and would ask you.  What does the "Wind Sock" symbolize?
