A Community of Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Lovers

Hello All - I just got off the phone with a vet tech and I'd like to now put this out to the community . . . The flea situation is pretty bad here in NE PA and for the first time in many, many years, I personally am dealing with an outbreak. As I mentioned in a previous post, we were using Frontline, but discovered that it had lost its effectiveness. We have now switched to Vectra, which is highly recommended by our vet and I've found a good deal of positive feedback online. However . . . our house is obviously infested and we are going to have to work our way through the cycle. If we got an exterminator it would help the situation along, but I don't like chemicals and don't like the idea of our house being dosed with them. The vet tech just told me that it will take 3 months for Vectra to get the infestation under control. We are currently at the end of only week two - yikes. What she did suggest is that we give Gracie Capstar 24 hours before her next application of Vectra. I have also read some positive things about Capstar. I would really rather not administer or apply anything, but poor Gracie is scratching and biting quite often, and aside from her having to deal with the itching, her scratching and biting is creating matts, so she is also having to deal with me and my dematting tools! I would love to hear your thoughts on the idea of combining the Capstar and the Vectra, and if you have any non-chemical ideas, I'd love to hear those too. BTW, we are vacuuming A LOT!

If the flea problem is still persistent then the use of beneficial nematodes is advisable. The nematodes feed on flea larvae but are harmless to humans. They are used as sprays and cause no damage to trees and plants.

Has to be sprayed by professionals.. Once had a friend with infested cats.  She had this done inside and property..   If I remember correctly the service was guaranteed to last a year.

I did not get hurt Grace it was in the grass and Nug is actually gentle but was able to take me down. He held me down with his jaws on my shoulder, never bit down but was wanting me to be still. I was actually quite fascinated by his reaction. Puk and Magoo chased the ugly little bugger under the deck. They do move like a combination of a lizard and snake.

I can remember one other time that Nug did this to me. I stepped on a ground bees nest while hiking and was being stun numerous times and I took off running to try to get away from them and of course I was freaking out and screaming. Nug kept trying to knock me on the ground then, but I was so panicked that nothing was going to stop me from getting away from that area.

Such wonderful adventures LOL

Ugly!  OMG.   But Laurie you are just too funny.  I would have loved to see Nug knock you down.   Just as long as you weren't hurt.  What happened to the skink that was running toward you?   I would imagine you and Nug scared it away, or else you wouldn't have been laughing your ass off.  LOL  They look like half lizard and half snake.

They are harmless but, I never saw an adult till last spring. The dogs chased it right towards me! I screamed (like a big sissy) and tried to run but Nug got so freaked out at my scream he knocked me down on the ground and tried to hold me there. I ended up laughing my ass off. I swear to this day he was treating me like a pup and wanted me to settle down. It worked!

OMG! I'm not afraid of lizards or snakes, but these guys would defininitely stop me in my tracks! Are they poisonous or do their looks scare everything away?!

Laurie, what are skinks?  I've heard of Skunks but never skinks.  Lol.  Can you imagine if they did catch one with all their hair.  But then again, they don't even have to catch them to get sprayed.

Lois, that is really funny.  Mark would say "Ka Ka" to Pemon meaning dirty.  You probably have all hear of palmetto bugs.   They come from Palm Trees and water.  They are a gigantic cockerroach. Well, needless to say we have a big palm tree in the back yard.   Yup, you've got it.  Pemon kills them when he catches them.  I forgot to ask Mark if he then eats it.     I just asked Mark and he said no because he finds them dead.  Yukky!

I don't mind the lizards so much as the skinks that are around my house, those things look the size of a small squirrel when they are full grown and scare the crap out of me. If the dogs ever caught one (thank god the skinks are extremely fast) I would run into the house screaming and not let them back in.

Lol Lois!!  Last summer we had a lizard that snuck in the house and I nearly had a heart attack!  Maybe this summer Opie will be our exterminator! Lol.
