A recent news article highlighted the danger of a toy that amounts to a ball with a single hole.  In the most recent incident, a dog was euthanized after its tongue was destroyed by the suction caused by the toy (reported to be by Kong).  This is certainly not the first time a single hole in a hard rubber toy has caused serious injury.

The problem is that the toy has only one hole, and because of this, the dog's tongue is at risk when the suction of the toy's only hole "grabs" onto the tongue.

With all dog toys, avoid those with only one hole that can cause serious injury to the tongue (loss of circulation, leading to death).

The toy in question is one sold by Kong called "the Beast", it is a rope toy with a ball on one end.  It was the ball on the end that came loose from the rope.  That ball has only one hole.

My advice, do not buy this toy.  If you've bought it, try to return it to the retail location where you bought it. Failing that, contact Kong and ask for a refund and tell them why.

Maybe a decade ago, there was another case.  That time, the dog also died, but the toy was not made by Kong.  In any case, I was surprised to see this come up in the news again, and especially surprised to hear that the Kong toy was reported to be the cause.  I thought they'd know better.  Anyway thought it worth mentioning, as there are certainly a lot of toy manufacturers out there, and if it saves one dog to alert people to the hazard, I've done my good deed for the day ;)
