Is a spray bottle of water a good thing to use to correct inappropriate behavior in a puppy?  He likes to bite to get our attention even when we are not playing.  Will the spray bottle cure it or make it worse?

You're right Jim.  Never mind spraying within 3 seconds - how about catching them in the act at all.  They say you shouldn't scold them unless you have caught them in the act of what ever they are doing wrong.  Well, let me tell you Pemon is a big sneak.  He seems to know when to get into trouble when we are not looking and by the time we find out what he did, it's supposedly too late to scold him. But, the funny thing is, he knows what he did and he knows it's wrong, but that won't stop him.  You just can't help but love them.  they are so smart.

My daughter's Golden Retriever likes opening her mouth and drinking it when she tries to correct!  lol  I hear you should spray from the hip so it does not seem like an attack.  Sort of a surprise spray from no where.

Hi Jo Bill,  Re. the spray bottle, it's hard to say as every dog has it's own reactions to corrective methods.  At our Day Care they use a spray bottle ( water) to disperse large groups of dogs that start to get overly active and barking.  Our trainer uses a spray bottle with "bitter apple" in it to redirect behaviors that are not wanted.  Buddy just kind of ducks out of the way of the spray.  When she pulls it out he crouches to avoid it. I guess it's useful with a full program of training and corrections. I don't like to use it.  It has to be sprayed within 3 seconds of the behavior and I just can't get there fast enough..... I'm slow---- and old !

haha we call it talking back when Maxx barks or makes this weird howling/growling sound...i think a lot has to do with the fact that they love the attention and want us to focus on them all the time :)

I think Gizmo LIKES it when I yell Ouch!  LOL.  He doesn't like being pointed at, though and that works occasionally.  Although, he usually "argues" with me (barks and makes noises) when I do it.  Sometimes I can slap my leg and he'll sit back sort of startled - for about 10 seconds.  We'll keep working on it.  He's still only 11 weeks old and in our house for 2 weeks.  Still open for more suggestions.  Just hope his "arguing" doesn't turn into agressiveness.

it didnt work for us :( Maxx liked being sprayed in the face. We have put pennies in a bottle and that will startle him a bit if he's getting into trouble.  Maxx bites for attention too and I've had good luck with screaming ouch or turning away from him but it's still something we are working on...any other suggestions from the group...
