A Community of Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Lovers

I hesitated to post this, there has been so much sadness, but I am hoping this story has a happy ending.

Quinn just came home after spending 3 days in critical care (yes again). This time it is not his seizures. He was admitted due to protein loss and a platelet count of zero!! These are the results of a multitude of tests:

Normal kidney function and liver function; Chest X-Rays unremarkable

Symptoms: Slightly enlarged liver and spleen; Low platelet count; Low protein; Low globulin; Low cholesterol; Low vitamin B12; Positive Lyme and Anaplasma

Diagnosis: Presumptive Protein-losing Enteropathy (Gastrointestinal Disease); Hypoproteinemia (low protein); Mild mitral and tricuspid regurgitation (murmurs); Mild DCM (heart disease) (likely secondary to current systemic illness); Thrombocytopenia (low platelets) (likely secondary to Lyme and anaplasma)

He is on a trunk load of meds and will be getting B12 injections for the next 6 weeks. He will go back for retest CBC, chemistry, and echo in 3-4 weeks.

Cancer did not show in any of the tests, but it has not been completely ruled out. Biopsies of the liver and spleen were discussed, but because of what DID show up along with what was ruled out, we agreed to treat for GI Disease and keep a close watch.

He was a pretty sick pup earlier this week, but we are seeing a gradual return of our happy boy, and we are remaining optimistic that he will continue to improve and all will be well again.

The posts lately have been sad and heartbreaking, so I am going to end with some good news...

Quinn hasn't had a seizure in 5 weeks!

Gracie was sure that all the trips and visits to ER and all the rooms full of people, dogs, and cats were purely for her social enrichment! She continues to love her agility classes and she continues to be our healthy, happy and energetic shining star of a girl. Contrary to Quinn, she is the poster child for good breeding!

Would love to hear some happy stories and see some fun photos :) Please share!

Thank you everyone for your concern, and love and support. Quinn seems to be gaining a little ground each day. Some of his energy is returning and he is alert and more active. We go for a recheck of his bloodwork on Wednesday and that will give us the full picture. We are looking forward to knowing if his labs reflect what we have noticed. It would be great if a course of Doxy and a change in diet is all that was needed. I'll keep you posted!

How is Quinn coming along?  Is he still improving?

So sorry to hear that our sweet Quinn is going through all of this, but hopeful that he will get better with all the love and the support from his beautiful sister and mommy. Sending you all hugs and our best wishes for a prompt and full recovery! Loving paws as well!

thank you for post... even before your adoption of Guinn, we loved him...   He is one of the great dogs that have been given to us...

Jo, thank you for the hugs, and please don't feel guilty about sharing Gizmo. Everyone is worried for him and for you, and we look for the updates. The sadness has been great, but it's where some of us are right now, and this community is an awesome cheer and support group. I believe in the power of prayer and positive energy!

DonMarie and Laura, thank you for the best wishes, and DonMarie, I am sorry about Picco's buddy, Cora. Cancer is such a dreadful disease.

Grace, you made me chuckle :) When it comes to wonderful attitudes, you are the queen my lady. Your journey through trial and tribulation is an inspiration to us all! It is truly a blessing to have you back again and feeling well!!

Quinn is making small steps in the right direction. Yesterday, he took a stuffy outside, trotted around with it and shook it until it was "dead." And he actually ran several feet!! He is also back to woofing at me when he thinks there is something that I should be doing for him. He haven't seen any of these behaviors in quite a while, so it is very very heartwarming.

Jo, I pray that you are getting some similar happy moments and that both of our boys will get past this scary time.

Hugs to all... and kisses from sweet Gracie, and clobber paws from the Mighty Quinn (he swears the clobbers are an act of love and affection)

CJ so sorry to hear about Quinn's added problems.  Sounds like my test results months ago.  No seizures just diabetic commas.  Kidney failure.  Mostly caused by antibiotics.  I just can't take them.  That is why the 2nd leg had to go.  Happy ending.  I'm much healthier now.  I know what you mean about all the sadness.  But rest assured that the Crouse House is saying prayers for Quinn and he is in our thoughts.  Gracie keep up the good work and watch out for your brother. CJ you have a wonderful attitude.  Pemon sends loving paws.
