What are your thoughts on pet insurance? Sounds like a good idea in theory, what's your opinion? Any insurers you recommend or avoid? Rooney doesn't have any pr-existing conditions (that I know of or that the vet found at his first visit). He will need to be neutered in about 4/5 months.

Thanks in advance!

Boy I wish I had you Vet Janet.  Pemon will be going for his annual in August and I'm guessing $150 to $200.  We don't have pet insurance either.  Oh well if we have to give up something we will.  Pemon is number one.

We have been going to the same vet for 20 years and he gave us great advice in the beginning when we ask about pet insurance. He told us that there are so many things that are not covered and the word he used was ripoff. He suggested that we take the money which seems to be around $45 to $50 and put it in the bank and save it for when and If it is needed and then you know your issue will be covered. So that is what we have done and it has worked for us.

That's great Jules. Pedro and I wish that Rooney never needs to use it, but it's there and it's peace of mind for you.

As for keeping him in a hermetically sealed room until August... hahaha, good luck with that ... He's a doodle, remember? LOL!

One thing that Trupanion covers is prescription food and the vet has recommended that we put Pedro on a "mobility" formula that helps prevent hip dysplasia, so the insurance covers 50% of 90% of the cost which basically is paying for our premiums (because Pedro chomps down two bags of the food a month!)

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd come back and let you know I decided on Trupanion insurance. I found their coverage and adjustable premium/deductible options to be best for us right now. Rooney is enrolled but we have a 5-day accident and 30-day illness waiting period - I will be keeping him in a hermetically sealed room until August ;)

I think Pet Insurance is a wise thing to have.  I had a brochure from our Vet about allergies and it stated if we own a breed that tends to have allergies they recommend you get Pet Insurance.  I'm so bad, haven't done it yet.  But Alessandra is right, our Fletch had cancer too.  Can get very expensive.

I don't know..  every high dollar question has always been thought of as quality of life for the dogs in question.  Insurance or not I would have made no other decision.

Hi Jules, from past experience with Pedro's angel, Renata who unfortunately passed away from cancer, we got pet insurance right away when we got him. I know that sometimes the monthly premiums sound like your paying and not getting anything in return but that's the nature of insurance, right? And though it's been a few times only that we have needed to use it, it's been worth it and made up for premiums paid because I can go in to the vet and get them to do whatever they need to do without worrying about limiting my decisions based on financial concerns. I highly recommend Vet Insurance from Trupanion which is offered in both Canada and the US, but definitely compare to other companies, I think in the US you have more options.
