As Opie has neared and passed his 1year old birthday mark his coat has started to shed its puppy fluff and I have had tumbleweeds of red hair blowing around my house.  In fact its SO bad that it has broken my vaccum 2x!  I was brushing him EVERYDAY but apperently I wasnt brushing well enough because he developed 3 mats around his neck where his collar rubs, 1 behind his right ear and 1 on his back hip.  I felt like an awful doodle mommy and I took him into the groomers friday.  After talking to my trusted groomer we decided to shave him down completly, leaving his ploom and ears long because he didnt have any mats there AND it has taken him a full year to grow such a beautiful ploom.  I hope this will cut down on the red tumbleweeds clogging my vaccum and it also allows him to finish his coat change with less chance of mats.  He seems to LOVE it and I swear has been alittle more friskey and fresh this past weekend.  I miss terribly his long beautiful hair but I keep telling myself it will grow back and this was needed.  The mats were pretty big and I felt terrible that he had to feel the pain of matted hair.  I am going to keep his coat shorter for now, invest in some better combs and I bought him a new rolled leather collar instead of the material one he had been wearing.  I have been trying to post a pic of his haircut but my phone keeps dropping the email... so hopefully I will get it up soon!

Gizmo has joined the "Naked Puppy" Club.  You're not alone anymore, Opie.  We look like TWINS!

Ok...here's Gizmo new "look".  It's waaay shorter than what we expected, but it will grow.  It was pretty long.  We left his tail long, though.  It's sooo pretty.

Welllll, Gizmo long locks are going to be a bit shorter by this afternoon.  He's getting "cleaned up" a bit - not short, just managed.  :)

Jo Bill - Just saw the pics you posted with Gizmos new jacket - his hair has gotten long! Love it!!  Laurie - you are exactly right!! Thats what the groomer told us, I thought I was doing a well enough job brushing him but we apperently were using the wrong utensil!  She told us to get a long toothed metal comb also.  Good to know and we will do this from now on!

Margaret, he might not shed anymore. It may just be that he is blowing his puppy hair. Nug did the same thing. Always use a comb with long teeth instead of a brush, this way you get all the way to the skin. You will never have problems with Matt's. It will grow back really fast.

Margaret, I know what you mean about the mats.  But, thankfully, I don't have a problem with the shedding.  I get a little off him each time I brush though.  I thought I was brushing him enough a while ago, but when I took him to the groomer she had to really cut him down.  Thankfully it was summer.  Now I "try" to brush every 3-4 days.

Gizmo mats around his very curly neck and behind the ears, too.  Right now his coat is so long and fluffy on his head I can hardly see his eyes!  I wanted to let him go longer for the winter, but I think he's going to have to have another trim .... SOON!  He is beautiful with the longer coat, though.  Especially his legs.
