Today Opie turned 1! I cant believe how fast this year has gone... this time last year we were getting ready to place a deposit on first choice male. Now a year later and we are sitting in the livingroom cuddling our big boy! He has grown and changed and calmed (just a tad bit) and he is the best addition we could of brought into our family!
We have had great adventures in just a short year; snow, rain, beach, camping, road trips, Nevada, sleep over at grandmas, festivals, splash dogs, BBQ'S, parties... he is THE best party host, he greets everyone with a wet nose and a warm lick of the tongue. He is also a great watch dog as he alerts us to any uninvited guest whether it be the mailman or nieghboring cat. He is even so thorough as to 'inspect' everything bag that comes into the house for contraband (doggie treats). Opie has become an expert Truck rider and asks ever so politely for his window to be let down by sticking his cold nose right behind the drivers ear. He has become a wonderful friend to his 'brother and sister' and offers them a comfy "pillow" when they want to lay on the ground to watch 'toons. He is a silent companion always at my feet. I know when I look down he will always be there. He is better then a soft pair of socks when I get cold!
In my attempt to shed some unwanted weight I have called on him to walk alittle farther... alittle longer... with me and he has never complained! He is more then happy to go out and walk with me in any weather and in fact I think he likes it even more when its pouring!
He has made so many friends around town and we literally can not walk around the block, store, dog park or take a hike on the river without people stopping us and wanting to meet him. There hasnt been a single person that meets him that doesnt say, Oh he is the PERFECT dog. I knew I was going to love him, we all knew we were going to love him... but we didnt expect it to be this much. I cant imagine waking up to him not being there, smiling and tail banging against the crate in joy. He has brought so much joy to not only us but to EVERYONE in our family. When the kids go to visit the grandparents, Opie is always invited or should I say... demanded. Lol. My father-in-law likes to pretend he ISNT a big softie and that Opie is just a dog BUT the first thing he says is, wheres that boy?? And he grabs the leash and they are running out the door to the local park. You cant look into his big brown eyes without absolutely falling to pieces.
A small quick update on behavior - he is doing GREAT. He knows all of his basic commands and obeys very well. Now we are working on some fun trick commands. At our local family petstore pet apperciation day we found the booth for our local therapy dogs organization and they loved him, felt he would be a perfect fit so I am going to start that process soon. He has a real interest in water, and we are a very active outdoor family so we started taking him to splash dog events and we want to start that soon also. I need to get him in more water before I will start the dock jumping but so far he seems very interested. He is still best friends with Frenchy the labradoodle and they get together often.
I am trying to get some pics uploaded so hopefully you will be able to see some new ones by the end of today.
XOXO to all of you and all of your wonderful doodles out there!! Opie and I hope that you are having as much today as we are!
