Well, it seems Gracie is destined to get all the terrible things she is vaccinated against getting. Vaccinated against Lyme Disease . . . Got it! Vaccinated against Bordetella . . . Got it! Had Gracie to the vet on Monday and while she is not positive that it not a throat irritation of some sort (injury from something swallowed, etc.), she is pretty sure it is kennel cough. Can't figure out where she got it from. We do go to obedience class, but none of the dogs there are exhibiting any symptoms. Anyway . . . she is on antibiotics (which from what I read aren't really going to do anything) and we have "cough drops." However, it almost seems to be getting worse. She is coughing more than earlier in the week and she is bringing up a lot of phlegm (white). I feel so bad for her and when she coughs during the night--I feel bad for all of us!

Do any of you know of any home concoctions that might help with the plegm? I am giving a teaspoon of honey a few times a day and I have tried peppermint tea. She likes the honey--the tea--not so much. I'm thinking of also trying apple cider vinegar in her water, but based on her "it must be poison" reaction to the tea, I doubt she will drink it.

So . . . we are missing Sophie cat, but our Gracie is doing much better. We ran the vaporizer for 2 days straight and finished 4 doses of prednisolone. She has a week or so to go on the antibiotics, but so far so great. She hasn't coughed at all in two days, even during exercise and crazy doodle antics. Still not sure if her cough was due to kc or trachea injury/irritation, but it seems that the pred had the greatest, quickest effect, so there must have been inflammation of some sort. I had to stop researching and just put my trust in my vet. I don't like to give meds and have at times turned them down in favor of an alternate treatment, but there are just too many conflicting ideas out there on coughs and how to treat them or not treat them; it was making my head spin! Bottom line - one week later--no cough; no nasty phlegm; happy doodle!!

Wow CJ you have had such a tough week!

I'm sorry to hear about your cat!

Sandi is right about the bordatella vaccine being like the flu vaccine. I hope that Gracie gets over it quickly!

Yes Sandi . . . it's been a learning curve these past several days ;}  It does all make sense, but I never put it into that context before . . . never had to. Gracie is getting better. We have given her a couple of doses of prednosolone. We have it on hand for our very old cat, who I must honor by saying that after 19 wonderful years, we had to have her put down this morning. Very sad.

Gracie's coughing got very bad over the weekend. Lots of hacking; lots of phlegm. Our vet suggested 3-4 doses of the pred, and that has made a tremendous difference. Still not sure if it's trachea injury or kc, but we will give one more dose of pred and then finish off the antibiotics and see how it goes. She is not wheezing at all; never did. But she does still cough a bit with exertion. It's been a bad week with "the kids." Hoping for a better next week.

Not laughing at your expense, but our first doodle got kennel cough, despite vaccination after his only trip to the kennel.  He only had a mild case though -- coughing with exertion.  My understanding is bordatella is like the flu vaccine -- greatly decreases chance and severity, but not eliminate.  The dog may get a different strain than what is loaded in the vaccine.
