This time the FDA is asking for help from consumers and Vets to make reports if their pet gets sick from eating jerky treats:

They've also expanded their concern from just Chicken Jerky treats to include Duck, Sweet Potato and/or Dried Fruit.

If you suspect your dog is sick from eating a jerky treat, see your Vet and bring the package & sample of the treat if you can.  The FDA may request your permission for additional tests (which they will pay for).  According to the article (above link).

The more information they have, the sooner the cause of these illnesses and deaths can be found.

Personally, I quit feeding my dogs jerky treats and try to buy only US/Canadian sourced chews (not always easy, as manufacturers are not required to provide this information).

I am trying to stay away from everything from China. they don't have any regulations on what they put into dog food and it is too dangerous. I have been giving Zeke baby carrots and he thinks they are the best thing ever plus lowfat!

Picco gets mostly simple homemake biscuits or lean chicken tendies for training.  I was giving him pigs ear chewies and found that it can cause or aggravate a yeast infection, which it did. A friend had a husky that got ear yeast infections every time she got a pigs ear too.

"almost as thrilled"

It is terrifying.  At one point, I tried making my own chicken jerky treats (thinly sliced chicken breasts, low oven for a couple of hours), but they were brittle and I felt a need to keep them in the freezer for freshness....  I've since discovered that the dogs are almost a thrilled to occasionally be given their regular kibble as a treat (not at meal-time ;)

Gizmo doesn't get many treats.  He usually gets a popsicle, though.  Our vet told us to give him his dog food as a treat when he was a puppy.  He didn't get treats until we took him to classes and started "official" training.  I will read labels from now on, though ... for the times when he might get a treat it will be made in America!

Thank you for this update. I watched a whole show on treats that are made in China, it was terrifying. I now only by treats that are made in the US or Canada as well. In Canada we have a company called Roll Over and their products are all made in Canada, my dogs love them!
