Has anyone noticed their doodle scratches and chews on themself? My 5 month old pup Patch does. He has some bumps and little scratches on his inner legs and stomach.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I just took Patch to the vet and it appears to probably be a cause from the "sanitary shave" he had done during his grooming. He has had that done before with no reaction but I guess he got razor burn as sometimes we do! Well $95 later- a spray and antibiotic and exam I have a reason. Hmm... Tempted to call the grooming place and let them know- in a nice way:-)

Mine has a lot of itching issues too. I think it's some sort of allergy. I've tried different foods (sensitive skin formulas) and treatments, but nothing rids the itch. I go to the vet frequently with this issue and they prescribe him steriods or antihistimines depending on the severity. There is also allergy testing you can do to determine any environmental allergies. Talk to your vet about your options and the cost. There is also special food they can put them on to rule out food allergies, but this is a VERY expensive route to take and is pretty unsuccessful.

In the meantime, benedryl usually banishes the itch temperarily. Give 1 pill per 25lbs (mine gets 3 pills per dose). It makes them sleepy, but sometimes if you can break the cycle they'll get over the itch.

Does your pooch shed? Mine (sadly) does. And when he itches, he sheds even more!! My mom always jokes how my "hypoallergenic dog has allergies." Go figure!

There is also a good article about possible causes of itching and diagnosis at:

From that article, you will see that there are so many possible causes of itching that if obvious treatments (bath with good rinse, stridex pads) don't work, the Vet is definitely the way to go. ;)

I would bring him to the vet. You never know, it could be anything from allergies or pimples to external parasites.

if the bumps look like pimples, they might just be puppy pimples. One of my dogs had that as a young pup, and the Vet said to simply treat them with stridex acne pads from the drug store. Wipe the pimple area with the pads a couple of times a day. If it doesn't clear up, or gets worse, you probably should discontinue the stridex pads and take him to the Vet for further diagnosis.

Hope this helps ;)
