A Community of Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Lovers

I need some advice re medicqtion for my please Jill

Hello All out there

my name is Jill, I reside in Sao Paulo Brazil. Relocated here 6 months ago  Sadly my labradoodle has been ill  several weeks and hospitilised He is home now   After several stressful weeks of not knowing what was wrong with him after his streptococcus and giarda cleared up it has been confirmed he has Addisions ...hypoadrenal cortison (Something like that)

My problem is I don't speak Portuguese my vet and  Endro doctor speak a little English swo its an additional struggle

my doodle only 18 months old was healthy until all of the above happened end of September

So I guess its a total shock he now needs meds forever

My Endo doctor prescribed Prediderm and Fludrocortison (apologies for any typos)

he started  after leaving the hospital on 5mg of prediderm once every 24 hours and 1ml of fludrisone every 12 hours (o.2)   This didn't really work and was rushed  back to hospital with high potassium

Then his meds were amended to one 5mg prediderm every 24 hours plus  2ml of fludrisone every 12 hours

Again back to hospital as sodium low and electrolyte out of balance

then amended again to NO prediderm (just stop as he as breathing very heavily and lethargic

Two days  ago we are now on No prediderm, but fludroortison only 1.3 ml every 12 hours ( 0.4) *double

Does anyone know if this is normal?

Cant say my doodle is doing really well s today and last  night he is wandering around our apartment, doesn't want to rest or lie down  He is drinking and eating normally   His breathing is concerning as its heavy, definitely not  normal:(

Don't want to go back to the hospital yet again if not really necessary  I have jus texted my Endro doctor but she hasn't replied  I have an appointment booked for next Thursday but hey that seems a long way off:(

Tough in a country for only a few months and not been able  to speak specifically in English  Plus no labradoodles exist here so Gatsby a bit of novelty

I goes I am really wanting someone, anyone to communicate - is this normal or am I blowing everything out of proportion with worry   And then theres the parting words from my doctor on Thursday ..some dogs can develop renal failure very quickly with this disease...wont express how I feel as words cannot describe my feelings adequately

A very worried doodle owner, Jill

I was checking for updates Jill.   Know we are all pulling for you.

Another article worth reading -

Did they test his ACTH levels?  This would confirm addison's, in which case the medication you mentioned seems the right stuff, and it seems it does take some time to get the dosage right.   If they didn't test for ACTH, they should have.  If the ACTH levels were normal, then the article suggests to look for Whipworms.  Odd but true.

So sorry you and Gatsby are going through this.  Be well!

This site seems to have a pretty good explanation of Addison's in dogs. It does state that although it is a medical emergency, it can be managed but often after several medication adjustments to find just the right balance. Lifetime management is key. Good luck.

Good advice from Alessandra. I certainly understand your concern and echo that I would be equally frantic. Please know that this community offers as much support as we can and we will have you and Gatsby in our thoughts and prayers. Keep us in the loop.

Oh, I am so sorry!  I would be just frantic as you are.  I have no experience with Addison's or with any of the medications you mentioned.  I agree with Alessandra...maybe an online consultation with someone who could help you to untangle all of this would be helpful!  I will be thinking of you and your precious Gatsby.

Jill, I'm so sorry that I can't help, but I searched and found this online vet service, maybe something to consider? I would be as desperate as you are...

Thinking of Gatsby and you, wishing that he gets well soon!

Can you contact your vet you had back in the States to see if maybe he/she can explain or give you advice?
