Luke and I need help QUICK! I made a huge mistake and did not start putting him in a pen in the house, during the day when I first brought him home a week ago. He has been so good and no trouble, sleeps in a crate at night, listens and usually minds, have certain rooms blocked off, he is definitely strong willed and tries to be the pack leader but knows I am in charge, etc., etc., etc. All of a sudden I realized I was going back to work on Friday. He can come to work with me with no trouble, but he needs to stay in a pen and be quiet. We just tried it and he went ballistic. I am sitting 3 feet from him and he is being so loud, you would think I left the state and forgot him.

How do I do this? All help will be appreciated!! Thanks!

They love to dig.  But they do out grow that too.  We want to see more pictures!  We want Luke, We want Luke.  Have you been to the Vet yet?

Great idea!  He already knows I think he is the best dog on the planet, hands down!!  It would be kind of fun for him to at least every now and then, to pretend to let me get my way!  The kong is a good idea and I have one frozen that I fixed the first day I brought him home and forgot all about it until you mentioned it.  We have been literally together for 7 days and 7 nights and I haven't minded at all.  Today, he really wanted to go out in the backyard and I wasn't ready, so he went on without me.  He couldn't get out, so I let him go. When I got there a couple minutes later, he was busy digging a new hole and didn't even look up.  Think he is feeling more secure.  Thanks!

Barbara, he is the best dog on the planet, don't believe otherwise... And he will adapt to the circumstances that you throw at him, but to help I was also going to suggest to place the kong with his kibble and maybe a special treat inside the crate not only when you go back to work but before and at other times that you just need to take a break. He will associate being in the crate with something yummy and entertaining for him (the kong still entertains Pedro for a bit) and if you do it for 5 minutes, then 10, 15 and come back to praise him, he will get used to it.

Best of lucks and loving paws to you and Luke from Pedro and I.

Thanks, Diane. I will try that. He finally settled down, I told him that he was the best dog on the planet, (actually said "Good quiet" and gave him a treat and he went to sleep. I am not sure if the job idea would work or not. I work at the front desk of a motel, just for my socialization and it would be fine. My boss is not a dog person and envisions a crate someplace in the other room and that is just not going to happen. Thanks again.

Also, if you're wanting to use the pen instead of the crate, try letting him have access to you but not to the rest of the room.   I don't know if your job entails moving around a lot, but it's mainly just being able to get next to you that they want.  When Dulcie was little, I let her play in her pen and sat on the sofa with the pen open to me but she was still enclosed.   If you're sitting at a desk you might try that.

Barbara - try waiting until he is sacked out for a nap, and then put him in his crate. I used to sit nearby until she fell completely fell asleep again with the door to the crate open and then would close it after she was snoozing.   I still put Dulcie in with a piece of chicken jerky stuffed securely in a Kong (so she can gnaw on it without getting it out easily.)  I also cover the crate with a blanket day or night so she thinks it's time to go to sleep.  Don't know if it will help, but she didn't fight me so much when she was groggy sleepy.
