Gizmo! Are tails supposed to be curly?????

We have had our puppy for one week now.  He is 10 weeks old.  Gizmo was quite shy at first, but had adjusted very well.  He found his voice a day or so ago.  Now he "argues" with me when I scold him and barks at his toys when they just lay there.

Gizmo has made great progress in just one week.  His accomplishments:  sit on command, knows to go to door to potty - no sounds, just goes to the door, knows command "go in the house" when we are done outside, has learned to climb the step into the house and the one from the porch to the sidewalk, doesn't whine when he's put into his "condo" for the night or when we go away, brings toys back to us when we play, knows the word NO - but he chooses when to listen, and walks on leash without pulling.  He does stop and doesn't want to go again, but we'll conquer that.

Gizmo has developed an extreme liking for my petunias, violas and the wood chips in the garden.  I have picked up as many of the woodchips as could be found and am constantly removing them from his mouth.  He also eats grass - from the roots!  I think he's part horse!  He knows when he needs to go potty, but likes to roll in the grass and play before doing the deed.  If I try to take him in the house before he's finished, he pulls back on the leash.  I let him snoop a little more and, voila!  He finishes up.  THEN we go in the house where he sits automatically, waits for me to take off his leash and gets his treat (a piece of his dog food).  Sometimes he even sits up to get the treat .... sooooo cute!

We are trying to teach him not to bite when we play.  A loud clap and a firm NO gets his attention.  Then we put a rawhide chew or toy in his mouth and tell him he's a good boy.  Hopefully repetition will win.

The only concern I have is that his tail is curly.  His father is a standard poodle and mom is a beautiful silky golden retriever.  Should his tail be curly - it looks like a spitz, or is this something that will change as he gets older???

Either way, we love him so much.

My Bernedoodle's tail curls up on his back and that is pretty much where it stays, and my Goldendoodle holds his straight up when he is alert or wanting to play otherwise his tail is more like a golden retrievers tail that hands down when he is relaxed, although it very rarely stops moving from side to side.

Yea!!! I'm so glad that someone else has a doodle with a curled tail.  Do you have photos up yet?  I'd love to see him.

Tooooo funny!  MY name - Oh!  I am told that my mother read Little Women and liked the name Jo.  I am nothing like that character, though.  I have two older sisters - Joy and Joan.  My dad was a farmer, so I think he wanted a boy ...... so Jo was the perfect name.  The last name came with my husband.  His name was Richard Bill.  He passed away in a car accident 7 1/2 years ago.

Jo Bill:  How do I say this?   I know where Gizmo came from.  I do remember the movie the Gremlins.  They were really cute furry things.  I was talking about your name!  Ha Ha.

Actually, I'm not sure where his name came from.  It was just something I popped out when considering some names and Terry liked it.  He is SUCH a Gizmo, though - it suits him.  Remember the movie Gremlins?  The head gremlin was named Gizmo.  He was cute & cuddly during the day, but if you fed after midnight he was a very naughty (a terror).  Our son told us not to feed Gizmo after midnight when we told him his name.  Funny ... I didn't remember that until he said that.   Gizmo sometimes carries his tail down, but most of the time it's curled.  It's really cute, though.    Gizmo does really well with a loud hand clap when he's biting at me - usually my pant legs.  He stops, I tell him good boy and put a chew stick or toy in his mouth and pet him.  He is everything we wanted in a dog.  He found the doorstop this morning and I video taped it on my phone.  I need to figure out how to put it in my pics.  It's hilarious!

Jo Bill:  (Can I ask where that name came from?)  Aren't they amazing.  We had Pemon house trained in a week.  They really are so smart.  Pemon's tail did not curl up.  It was all fuzzy with puppy fuzz.  My husband use to say he had a RasaFarrian (sp?) tail.  But he now has a beautiful tail and he does curl it up quite often, but most of the time it just hangs down.    He also did the biting when playing.  He doesn't do that anymore with me, but he does do it with my husband Mark because he ruffs him up.  When mark says "ouch, ouch".  Pemon stops and just looks at him.  We also use to tell him kisses instead of biting or we would say "lick"  that helped too.
