Somehow Gizmo has developed an ear infection.  When we got home from vacation (about 2 weeks ago), I noticed his ear was really dirty.  We wanted to have him groomed, so I told the groomer that his ear was dirty and to be sure she cleaned it well.  When we picked him up she told us that it looked really bad, not just dirty and he probably had an ear infection.  We checked it when we got home and called the vet first thing the following morning.

The vet's assistant cleaned his ear and they checked the gunk under a microscope.  Yup, he has an infection.  As it turned out, it's a staph infection.  This is very dangerous for Terry since he has no immune system because of the chemo he went through and staph is very dangerous.  So Terry needs to stay away from cleaning or touching the ear and I need to wash very well after treating the ear.  The vet gave us medicine and rubber gloves (just in case) and told us to come back in a week.

I cleaned his ear and put in the medicine each day the following week.  Once in awhile, the ear looked like it had been bleeding a little.  That really scared me.  When we took him back for a check-up, they cleaned the ear again.  The vet said it looked better, but was not healed.  So, Gizmo got an anti-inflamatory shot and we got more meds for the ear.

Gizmo is absolutley perfect when we clean and treat his ear.  He leans into it, actually...must feel good.  We go back on Friday for another re-check.  It keeps getting gunky and I clean it out.

I know I read that Poodles are prone to ear problems.  The groomer does pluck the hair from his ears, but somehow he still got an infection.  I'm not sure how or why he got this.  He had been given a bath by the boarding place before we picked him up after vacation.  Maybe they didn't dry his ears good.  Maybe it was something that just "happened".  Maybe he scratched his ear and it got bacteria in the scratch.  I really don't know.  I just hope that it clears up soon.

You guys! I love coming to this site, it has really becoming my one source of smiles and laughs and loving paws during stressful days and even regular days. It is such a joy and so  much fun to hang out (virtually) with all of you. - Loving paws from Pedro who is between my spare bedroom where I have my computer and "his" bedroom that he shares with Daddy and I waiting for me to go to bed. I just wanted to say, thanks for the smiles and the laughs and the young love blooming on here! Fantastic! - hugs and loving paws from Pedro's Mommy, Alessandra

Oooooohhh Dyna ... you make me blush!  You're not THAT much older than I am.  I'll be 8 months in a week.  I think you're real pretty, too.  And don't worry about that "Lard Butt" name your dad calls you .... there's just more to love.  :)

I am glad Gizmo is feeling better. I do have a little crush on him, I really like red heads but I was afraid he would think I was a cougar after all I am 11 months old now.

That's right Jo.  Mitzi does the same thing with Sunny Ray with his left over drops that we do with Pemon.   We don't put the drops in their ear we just wipe with them.  I swear it really helps.  Pemon hates to get drops in his ears, but he sits still when I wipe them out.    Gizmo, so glad you are improving.  Terry, you stay healthy!

I am so sorry! Poor Gizmo! Sunny Ray went thru the same thing (I have a blog on my page), but it was just a bad yeast infection - not staph. I can't even imagine what you and Terry are going through. I know that I still use the drops and rinse his ears out once a week for preventative measures. There's no telling where or how Gizmo got the infection. I heard somewhere that poodles have a much smaller ear canal, so they are more prone to ear probems, but I'm not posititve. I hope it clears up soon and the next check up shows that he's getting better.

Oh sweet Gizmo, I hope you feel better! Sending good vibes your way and your Daddy so that he stays healthy and away from the infection and to your Mommy who is a pawsome nurse! I had an ear infection once and I scratched it so bad that my ear started bleeding so Mommy and Daddy got scared and took me to the ER doctor (it was late at night) but he cleaned my ear and put drops on it and after a few days, I felt better. I'm so proud of you that you let your Mommy put the drops in your ears, you are such a great Doodle pup. Mommy and I wish you all health and send you loving paws! - Pedro

We are BOTH being very careful!  Can't afford to take any chances.  Gizmo is feeling better though.  His ear is not getting as gunky as often or as much.  I clean it out daily even though the vet said we could wait a week til we brought him back in.  His other ear is starting to look dirty, so I'm cleaning that out now, too.  Better safe than sorry.

Poor Gizmo.  Pemon has a bad ear infection one time.  We gave him drops and antibiotics.  Cleared up and we never had another problem.  I still have some of his ear drop left so I drop some of that on a tissue and wipe his ears out periodically.  Just can't be helped sometimes.  I hope he gets well soon and Terry, you be careful also.

Poor Gizmo!  He is lucky to have such a patient Mommy/nurse.
