A Community of Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Lovers

Ok-so i've been trying to work with louie and it's not going so well.  He thinks everything is a game...i go to get his lease ( and he looooves being outside) but as soon as i get the lease he takes off running and plays dead.  He won't budge once i have him ready to go.  Also he doesn't like treats so i haven't been able to get him to sit, lay down, come, or anything on command because he couldn't care less about getting a treat.  Basically he is just really stubborn! Any good advice??? I want him to be well behaved and able to respond to simple cues.  I tried the bell on the door thing right when i got him at 6 months old but he was scared of it!  Also he is very scared of strangers (other dogs he loves), especially men.  How do i get him more comfortable around people??? I feel bad that he is scared or hate that people probably think i hit him.  Any suggestions on how i can get louie to follow some directions???? I didn't get him til he was 6 months old and i don't exactly know how he was raised.  I do know that he was raised out in the middle of the country on a farm.  I believe he was in a barn and probably didn't have a ton of human interaction (which makes me said).  MY mom raised toy poodles as a kid, so all of our litters were so spoiled and my siblings and i were constantly playing with them so i hate that Louie is scared of people.  Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm learning so much on this site, so thanks everyone for being so informative!

Jamey, glad to hear that Louie is doing better and responding to treats and training. Our Doodles are so good natured that I am sure that with your patience and love he will overcome whatever bad experiences he might have had when he was a little baby puppy. Spending time with him and repetition definitely works. Pedro has always been VERY food motivated, he's a big fan of cheese, carrots and frozen cranberrries which I would suggest you try if store-bought treats aren't a big favourite of Louie, but I think the most important factor will be the time and the love that you give him. I've also found a great group of people on this site and thanks so much to Blue for being so awesome in setting it up and maintaining it. I've learned so much and I'm so proud to share pics and adventures of Pedro with other lucky Doodle-humans! :)

Oh Laura, I didn't say he was calm.  We kept telling him not to jump and he didn't but he wouldn't leave them alone - the tail wouldn't stop wagging and he was turning inside out with joy.  After about 10 minutes then he was really calm.  But as I said at least he didn't jump on them.  Bob was later (he's the one that doesn't care for dogs.) so Pemon didn't bother him much at all.  I guess Pemon could tell there wasn't much love there.

Hi Grace,  glad to hear Pemon was pretty good with the guests. How did you keep him calm when the guests arrived?

That's great Jamey.

Hey everyone, Pemon was pretty good last night with the guests.  We did not put him in the crate.  I don't know how my friend can't like dogs.  Especially Doodles!

He learned to sit really fast and now i feel like he will be very trainable.  Just thought I would update incase anyone else has a picky eater! :)

Laura, Pemon is the same way.  When my hairdresser comes we put him in the crate.  He really does not seem to mind.  We did the same thing with our CPA.  I have Company coming tomorrow night for dinner and two are dog lovers, one isn't.    My husband said what are we going to do.  I plan on putting him in the crate and when everyone is settled in I will let him out and see what happens.  My main concern is that he jumps on guests.  Thank heavens he doesn't jump on me.  It's not a form of punishment because he likes the crate from time to time.  Will let you know how we make out.

I too need some suggestions on how to stop Gracie from jumping up when people come over or when we return from being out, we have tried everything, ignoring, time out, leashing, etc. but as soon as she is off the leash or out of time out she is just so excited she can not seem to stay calm or help herself. It only lasts a few minutes but seems like it is getting worse. Does anyone have any suggestions that they have done differently that might work for us.
