A Community of Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Lovers

I have a question I need to ask my favorite people.
Ernie and I just purchased a canoe and want to be able to take the boys with us on canoe outings. Has anyone ever taken their pups canoeing? Any tips on training them to sit in a canoe? They have never been In A boat, but love the water, just wondering if there is a good way to train them and make it a positive fun experience.

Oooooh Cousins Three Musketeers! That sounds like a fun adventure that your Mommy and Daddy will be taking you on! A canoe-boat! I hope you enjoy it and Mommy and me can't wait to hear and see the pictures of it! Loving paws from your cousin that loves you, Pedro

P.S. I don't think that there are whale puppies in the rivers or the lakes, but say hi to the fish puppies for me, okay?

He has 4 dog paddles Kathy.
Lois that what I'm worried about, he will do fine in the yard, but put that boat on the water......I have gotten some great tips on line though, like take them for a jog before we go, and let them swim first before getting them in the canoe. I'm sure my husband will video tape because he will make me get them in so I get dumped.

I hope so Diane, we Love to do fun stuff with them. I'm almost positive Nug won't be a problem. Just not sure about Puk. I know there is no way that Magoo would get in a boat, but I'll try with all of them, it should be interesting. I'll make sure to take pictures of us canoeing in the backyard. Lol

Laurie, Arkansas has many rivers and canoeing is a favorite pastime here.   Many years ago, I was canoeing on the river with a friend and came across a man with a golden retriever in his boat.  He had a fish on the line and when he had it about 10 ft. from the boat, he yelled "Go get it, Goldie!" and the retriever jumped out of the boat, swam to the fish and brought it back.  The guy helped her back in and off they went!  I've never forgotten it!  We see people with their dogs in canoes, so I know it can be done, but I'm not a strong enough swimmer to rescue mine if she were to get in trouble.  Our rivers can be pretty rough here, especially when they are up after a rain.  I think life jackets are a good idea and I think you have a good plan in place to train your guys. I wonder if you took them out on the water in a flat-bottomed boat first if it would help them get used to the motion/experience.   Wish I knew more and could give you better advice!  Bet your pups will love it, though!

Nug lays down in the car and does not move Puk however does move around, at least we can all swim and have life jackets. We will try it in a lake first where the water isn't moving. It should be interesting.
