Does your Doodle have "Hot Spots"??? Just got back from the Groomer!

Hi Everyone!

I just had Daisy and Jax at the groomers.. oh boy were they full of matts.. even though they get a good brushing.. so they both had really short cuts ( I'll post pics soon).. but ... when I picked them up, the groomer said Jax has "hot spots". She explained that because of the type of fur he has, when he gets wet it stays by the skin and then doesn't dry so it causes a "rash like" spot.. I've never heard of this before. Does anyone's doodles get these?? She also told me that they should be coming every 2-3 weeks for a groom.. so I guess my next question is.. how often to you get your doodles groomed??  She also suggested to use a comb instead of a brush on them.  I hope all our doodle friends are doing well.. I haven't had much of a chance to get on and say hi, so I apologize. I think of you all often, but I'm still going through some tests and such trying to figure out why I keep having these dizzy spells!

It took us a while and a few bad experiences to find a good groomer. Pedro's groomer now is amazing though. When he goes he walks in like he owns the place and Lynn, the groomer and owner, loves him to bits which we can tell based on his attitude towards going. I hope you can find a good one that you can trust because the more I hear about this experience, the more it seems to me that groomer had no clue about what she was doing and made them very uncomfortable. Good luck and loving paws!

I contacted a mobile groomer in my area and she wanted $100+!  Ouch!  Our groomer charges about $65 for a full groom if he's not matted and not too long.  I like the idea of canned pumpkin.  Think I'll give that a try.  I don't know why Gizmo keeps getting "clogged up", but the pumpkin might be just the thing.  Thanks for the info, Laurie.

Finding a good groomer is such a challenge! I use a mobile groomer who comes to the house. It's reasonable~usually $60 where I live. And it removes the chances of Jasper either coming across a less-than-friendly dog AND of picking up any illnesses from the other dogs. The trainer we first had for our socialization puppy class recommended we try a mobile groomer and it has worked great for us. She just pulls up in her van and takes Jasper! It's great! Ask your vet's office if they can recommend someone. They usually know of a good one. Sooooo glad Jax is feeling better!!!

Thank you all so much for your advice. This is such a wonderful community!!! I'm going to try the canned pumpkin Laurie.. that's a great idea!  And I think I'll be on the hunt for a new groomer! The two spots on his legs are extra dew claws.. my Vet said that most dogs have one, but he has seen dogs that have extra..and I guess jax is one of those dogs!! Does anyone else's doodle have an extra dew claw? I wouldn't have known had the groomer nicked them! I feel horrible about their grooming experience!

Most dogs, express their anal gland when they have a bowl movement. It is more common in the small breeds to have problems expressing their anal glands but it can happen to the larger breeds also. If it keeps occurring to your babies, you can try adding canned pumpkin to their diet, a little spoonful at every meal usually works. If they are having problems with allergies then this could also be a direct link to the anal gland problem. Hopefully it is just a seasonal allergy problem and things will go back to normal soon. Try the canned pumpkin they love it! Make sure it is the plain kind though, no spices or sugar.

Funny you should say that about expressing the anal glands.  Gizmo had that done at the vet's office a month ago.  Today he went for his heartworm test and I had the vet check him again cuz he still licked after it was done the first time.  He said one gland was filling again and he got a little out of it.  Is this a problem Doodles?  As far as the grooming every 2-3 weeks .... WHAT??!  I agree ... get a new groomer.  This one either doesn't know what they are doing or the really DO know what they are doing and it "ain't honest"!

So glad it was an easy fix and that Jax is more comfortable now! I would stay far away from that groomer. I have never heard of any dog needing to be groomed every 2-3 weeks! Sounds ridiculous...if not down-right dishonest.

So we are back from the Vet. He said that Jax doesn't have hot spots.. the two spots he was licking on his feet we his dew claws. The one interesting thing we found out was, that the Vet said that he was licking and scratching because his anal duct wasn't emptying. He said he has had 14 patients in 2 weeks that just got back from the groomer and brought their dogs in.  My groomer says that they do this, but apparently not because when the Vet did it, fluid came out. He said Jax will be all good now. He hasn't licked or scratched since we got home! This is something I never knew!
