This is for any of you who have passed the CGC test with your doodle. Buddy and I are getting ready for the test. I could use some tips on passing by other dogs who are unknown to him on a loose lead. If he has met the dog and gotten a good sniff, he is usually fine, but he really wants to greet new friends enthusiastically.

Don't count on just maturity. Buddy is two and a half and still an eager greeter. And we too don't have that many come to the house for him to greet, We are making progress but it is slow. Right now he is in love with our agility instructor who is in a wheelchair, he goes right up for a gentle cuddle right away.

There is no deadline or huge rush to pass it, and it would be much easier to have some other dogs to practice with...I can't say I would be willing to go out in the single digits for dog walking or anything else for that matter!!  We have the same problem trying to work on Trixie's wild greetings of people who come into the house...we just don't have that many, so she doesn't get to practice being calm (not that I've ever been able to get her to!)  I think they will all calm down with some maturity, I just am not a very patient person! ;)

We took the class twice before we took the test. Jasper was only 10 months the first time and I knew he wasn't ready at that point. We are hoping to take the therapy dog test sometime this year. It's a process! Hang in there and keep practicing...

After today's lesson, we decided not to take the test Feb. 8 but to keep working. He still is having lots of trouble passing other dogs though on most of the other items he did ok. We will keep on working and hope he is ready for the next one probably in a few months. It is so hard in this weather as no one is out and about when it is less than 15 degrees and our walking is also limited by snow and ice.

I am hoping for a miracle.

Trixie passed the test also.  It was given at our local Petsmart, so I took her there several times a week leading up to the test so that she was really familiar with the store, and all the enticing smells, sights, and sounds there.  The last week before the test I took her there every day, and made sure each time to practice walking her close to and by any dogs whose owners would help us practice.  Immediately before the test I took her for a 4 mile walk.  Miraculously, Trixie did pass, but with her I think it was pretty much a miracle!   Like most other doodles, she thinks that meeting and playing with another dog is the most exciting and fun thing there is! :)

Good for you!! Our evaluator gave each dog a second (or even 3rd) try on a particular test item if needed. On the walking through a crowd test, Jasper kept going up to the evaluator (whom he had never met before), would sit right next to her, lean his head on her leg, and just stare up at her with that adoring doodle look! He did it was so funny. She tried so hard not to crack a smile and just said 'keep walking' to me. Remember you can always take it again if you need to...but give it a go! You will both do great!!

Tentatively February. 8. I have scheduled a private lesson following our agility class tomorrow and plan to sign up if the instructor thinks we are ready. We did fine with a run through with our class in December but he knew the other dogs in the class at that point. I probably will give it a try. I have been going to all the stores that accept dogs and walking around with him. He loves to go shopping with me. It has been so cold here that our outside walks have had to be limited. He regularly plays with a Jack Russell. That before the test should tire him out if I cannot get him out for several miles of walking.

Jasper passed the CGC in August, at 15 months old. That was the hardest part for him, too! Here is my best advice...Make very sure that you wear Buddy out right before the test. Jasper had a play date with his best doodle friend for 1 1/2 hrs just before the test. They ran outside, in August heat, for the whole time. That made all the difference. Jasper still gets excited on greetings and passing other dogs, but a tired pup worked great for us!!
Other than that...just give Buddy LOTS and LOTS of practice...walking around stores and strip malls gave us a lot of practice. Always reward when Buddy will watch you, too. Ask him to watch as you get close to another dog, before he gets too excited. Doodles are just so friendly!! Good luck to both of you! When are you taking the test?
