Thank you, it scares me so much to read about it and to hear about families that have experienced it, but it is good to know. I am very vigilant of not letting Pedro run around after he's eaten or had a  big drink of water but it's good to have the full picture of what is and what isnt'.

Jan, thanks for posting this.  I have read a bit about bloat, but this was very thorough and I learned some new info.  Dulcie has always had a tendency to retch if she has a very empty stomach, though, so I will try not to panic the next time she does it!

For what it's worth, I was talking to a friend of mine one day, and she said they were concerned about the neighbor's dog, who was retching but not actually vomiting anything.  The dog had eaten a loaf of bread off the counter....  I (stongly) suggested that it might well be bloat, and that if I was right, it was an emergency to be addressed a.s.a.p.    Turns out, the dog had indeed bloated.  The good news is that the Vet was able to save her.  The bad news is, that a year or two later, she bloated again, and did not survive the incident.  She was a large Lab-mix.  RIP
