Yesterday was warm enough for Gizmo to have a bath at home ... we do it outside in the garage.  We have hot & cold water out there, too.  AND, he REALLY needed a bath!  He smelled like a dog ... go figure.  He also had been at the Dog Center when I volunteered yesterday.  He played outside with all of his buddies and when it was time to go home, his feet & legs were black!!!  Ugh!  They offered to wipe him down for me, but I figured I'd just take him home & bathe him.

Soooo.....he was very good about the bath.  He loves the hose and stood and let me wash him up.  I think he's good because he's so used to going to the groomer and getting it done.  About 1/2 way through, I saw something out of the corner of my eye near the edge of the garage.  Gizmo saw it too and was up on his toes on FULL ALERT!  I looked and it was the biggest toad I have EVER seen!  I let Gizmo watch the stupid thing hop into the garage, heading for underneath a car.  Gizmo was pulling so hard on the leash that I decided to let him investigate and get it out of his system.

I think I might have let him get too close though.  I pulled him back and got a long handled "thingie" to prod the toad with.  I wasn't about to touch that thing!  UGH!  The toad didn't move.  I pushed and it rolled.  I thought it might get up and hop away, but it didn't.  So, I pushed again ... and again ... and again.  All the while holding a very wet & excited Gizmo back.  Eventually, I got the toad back to the garden beside the garage where he came out.

Gizmo & I finished up with the bath.  I ran out of towels, though.  I only have 2 and he was very wet.  So I dried him off the best I could and sent him in the house.  Then, I went out and took photos of the toad (see Gizmo's new album).  It took me about 2 hours to brush and dry him.  I only have a human hair blower and had to be careful not to let it get too hot.  He loved it.

He sat and let me blow his back, head & neck.  He tries to get the air when we use the blow dryer, so I knew he would be ok with it.  Afterwards, he went into our bedroom, curled up in a ball, and took a nap.  He had a very busy and stimulating day!

I also posted photos of our "path" in the front garden that Gizmo is supposed to use instead of tromping on all my flowers.  I guess he didn't get the memo.  LOL  Cuz he sure doesn't use them.  I think I saw him step on one two or three times since we put them in over a week ago.

It was a fun day and quite an adventure.

Oh my, I hope my boys don't find toads. I can deal with almost any kind of critter without much problem, but for some reason toad texture makes my skin crawl, just thinking about it. Eeeeewwwwwww!!
I really enjoyed Gizmo's story though, sounded like a nice day for both of you.

Boy, this toad thing has really gone crazy!  Thanks for the info, Debra.  I didn't get close enough to decide if his skin was thick & warty or smooth.  I also didn't check to see how long his legs were.  Next time I'll take notes.  LOL  I've heard frog legs are good, but I haven't tried that theory out.  Today's lesson was very nice ... can't wait for the next one.  :)

At least stray cats aren't poisonous!  LOL

From what I understand some of these toads are poisonous.  Laurie that is probably why Puk was drooling and foaming from the mouth.  Our other Dog Fletch caught one when he was a pup and came into the house drooling and foaming from the mouth.  We washed his mouth out with water and everything was fine.  Dianne, I'll have to google toads here in Florida because certain times of the year they are all over the place.  Haven't had a problem with Pemon yet, but there's always a first time.  He's too busy trying to get a hold on one of these stray cats.

Yeah, I didn't want him to grab it just in case it was poisonous.  I think he might have grabbed the poor thing's leg, though.

Sounds like Gizmo had quite a day!  Good thing he didn't pick up the toad - my Jack Russell snatched one up one morning, and like Puk, he began  drooling and foaming at the mouth.  I know that some toads are venomous, so I snatched him up and rinsed and rinsed his mouth - let him back out to do his business and I'll be darned if he didn't grab it again (so "rinse and repeat!")  But I did find out on the Internet that there aren't any venomous toads in Arkansas, so it was just an aggravation to him!  Lol!

giggles of the afternoon...  Toads/frogs would not harm you..  lol  but they eject a bitter substance into dogs mouth...   How quickly they spit out is the funny part..  Charlie was luckly he did not have a good hold..  Izzi was watching Charlie spit foam for a  couple of minutes, learning the lesson without the experience.    LOL

Thanks, Debra.  And, no Lois, Gizmo has never gotten ahold of one.  This was his very first "sighting".  I have no idea where that toad came from!  I thought he had gotten ahold of it's leg when it was under the car and I pulled him back real quick.  I think that's why the poor thing only rolled when I moved it.  Although, it did try to hop away when I took the photo.

Awe Jo, has Gizmo ever tried to catch a toad? We have lots of big ugly toads here that sit under the porch lights both front and back. Puk use to try and play with them until the day he decided to pick one up in his mouth. All I can say is toads must taste horrible because he dropped it like a hot potato and proceeded to drool and foam at the mouth for the next hour. Yuck
