Are two dogs better than one? Opinions please.

So...a very dear friend of mine manages a local humane society/shelter, and today I went by to drop off a dehumidifier that we donated. Well...I met "Woofie" a very young (likely about a year or so) Irish Wolfhound--mix maybe. He's not HUGE, but he's very, very big. He was found just two days ago along the river and he's in rough shape. Pretty skinny, infected eyes, ragged coat, skin irritations, a hematoma on his elbow... Here's the thing though, I played with him for a short while, and he is an absolute doll-baby. All he wanted was love and belly rubs. He sits and goes "down," so someone did or does care about him, but it doesn't seem that anyone is looking for him. Bottom line, he melted my heart, and I can't get him off my mind, and I am battling with whether or not to adopt him if he remains unclaimed, and I am at the point where I am considering taking Gracie to meet him.

So, opinions/experiences please on adopting a second dog with the idea that we have had Gracie for almost 5 years now, and she has always been a very doted upon "only child."

Awww...thank you so much Pedro. My eyes have watered from happiness many times over the past week. Quinn will indeed learn from Gracie, and we haven't told him this, but Gracie will always be the smartest in the family :) Can't beat a doodle for brains and lovability (although Quinn IS on-level with lovability)! We are hoping Quinn knows this is his safe and loving home for the rest of his life and he will never be hungry or lonely again.

Dear new Cousin Quinn, Mommy and me are so happy that you have found a forever family being brother to Gracie. You have found a wuuunerful Mommy and Daddy and we can tell that you are already very loved.

Mommy said that the first picshur that Auntie CJ posted of you looking at the camera made her eyes water a little from happiness and from seeing the nobility in your eyes.

You are in for a happy ride and we are sure that you will learn a lot from Gracie... she is a very smart Doodle girlie and we know you already love them as much as they love you... and as much as we love you too!

Loving paws from your new cousin,

Pedro

Wonderful!  Congrats!

(As for dinner plates, after 10-11 years, I still can't really trust my two to leave my dinner alone either, unless it's a salad, lol ;)

Thanks for sharing, CJ!  Looks like things are really working out.  And, by the way, I still don't leave my plate unattended, or things on the counter where Dulcie can reach - you should read my blog entry about the ham, from Dulcie's 2nd year.  I am just thinking about how much Gracie will enjoy Quinn when you are back teaching (I am about to start again, too, although it is just 2 afternoons a week for me!)  I don't feel nearly as badly as I used to leaving Dulcie behind, since she now has a buddy to keep her company! I have never had a rescued dog that didn't have some type of skin eruption, and fortunately medicine and care always resolved the issue.  Keep the updates coming!  Love seeing them! And Quinn looks like he knows he is home.  :)

Crazy, but GREAT day. Quinn was a doll in the car and a dream at the vet. They poked and prodded and loved him up and he took it all in stride. All the blood-work came back fine. Can't believe he doesn't have a tick-born disease!

We came home and Gracie went into a little frenzy! They ran around like nuts and Quinn then pounced on her a couple of times which I think terrified her, but he seems to listen to corrections and he settles down with an AH-AH! I then couldn't take the stink anymore and gave him an oatmeal shampoo and conditioner in the back yard. He was such a good boy--he stood still and didn't give me any trouble. Gracie watched from a distance--she had her bath this morning, and she's not a fan :p Then they had dinner (no food aggression) and then a walk! It was a learning curve for me and the dogs, but we made it up and down the road without mishap.

I just now discovered the answer to one of my questions. I left my dinner plate in front of the computer to go get my camera and came back to find Quinn paws up on the computer desk and my final boneless rib gone. He must have gotten in trouble for this before because without me saying a word he jumped off and scooted away. We'll work on this.

He's laying next to me right now and I can see that he is covered with red spots. The vet thinks some of the skin problems might be an allergic reaction to the fleas or to the food at the shelter or both. Hopefully it will clear up quickly.

The outside pics are when we first got home, pre-bath, and the third one is where he is at this moment. He is definitely and understandably exhausted, which is probably good for the first night :} I know I am exhausted!!

So, I'll keep sharing and posting pictures until you all get sick of me!! Thanks for all the support and expressions of excitement and happiness over the past few days. It certainly has been a whirlwind!

So fun!!!  So happy you are going to get him!!  He will be settled somewhat in his new digs, before he is neutered and continue to get healthier being in your home.  I'm with Alessandra...can't wait to hear about it and pictures!!!  ;-)
