So yesterday we took 8 month old "Buddy" to the "city" for the first time. Saugatuck, MI. is an artist-tourist-lakeshore, seasonal kind of place. We avoid it in the Summer because there seem to be too many Chicago-Detroit tourists who don't know how to drive, park, or be considerate of others. A lot of T-shirts and fudge are sold each day and many of these people walk dogs that are not very well trained - like their masters.
Immediately after getting Buddy out of the car, complete strangers approached ( quickly ) and start asking questions on top of each other. " What kind of dog is he? What is his name? How old is he? Was he a rescue? Does he really not shed? Is he hyper? Blah-blah-blah......
So, we answered the questions as best we could. We tried to explain that, no, he was not a "Norwich Terrier", his mother was a Golden Retreiver and his father was a miniature poodle..... yes, it was articifial insemination..... because, eh, because "it's easier that way".
We soon found ourselves surrounded by passer-bys.... with and without dogs and children. Buddy was somewhat overwhelmed by all of the attention. He wanted to be petted and given fudge and ice cream. ( we don't allow things like that.... especially never chocolate !
We came home after about an hour and 1/2 and he slept the rest of the afternoon. We decided we would try it again when fewer tourists are in town.... maybe November. All in all though, it did expose him to lots of different kind of people, children, other dogs.... lots of silly T-shirts and drips of melting ice cream and fudge.
