Admin Question - Would you have signed up if...

If we had this ning community set up such that you'd have to wait to be "approved" before your account became active, would you still have joined?

Background: There is a spammer, or team of spammers, that keep joining our community.  Ning support recommends we turn on "Approve new members before they can join" to control the problem.  We're concerned that the extra step (waiting to be approved), might interfere with real people wanting to join our community.

What do you think?  Would you have joined if you had to wait maybe 24 hours to be "approved"?

Jan, what ever you think is best.  I could always change my settings so I am not notified when we have a new member, but I love welcoming the people and sending them a red ribbon (only if they have posted pictures of their Doodles.)  I can put up with all the others, I just open it and close it  and then delete it. I should have more compassion beause after my divorice when I moved back to Florida I was only able to land a part time job in my field at first, so I worked a 2nd job which of course was telemarketing.  Worse job I've ever had my life.  I was lucky though because they moved me pretty quickly to the office.  Anyway I know what it's like to try to sell something and get hung up on etc. etc.  When they call my house.............sorry to say, I hang up.

Whatever you decide to do is fine with me. Afterall, you are the person who has to monitor all of this. I just enjoy being a part of this community.

Just so you know,  "approval" would not mean a thorough screening of the potential member.

It would just allow the administrators to prevent obvious spammers from joining.   Our other option is to manually check the new member listing regularly and remove them.  There is effort involved in both, and neither is perfect.

If you are concerned about privacy, please check your "Settings" (right side of your home page), and look over both your Profile (things like birthday can be shared or not), and your Privacy settings.  Customize these to your own personal level of comfort.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.  I think I've decided to leave it as is for now.  If even one good person were discouraged from joining, it would not be worth doing the "approval" method.

Just my take on it for now,

I defiently would still join!  In fact I might feel a bit safer about joining - we put alot of personal info up about ourselves - most even including where we live... if you had to be approved to join - I think it would be really nice!

And like I said Jan, it wouldn't hurt to try it.  It certainly would be great to get rid of those spammers.

Hi Jan, first of all thanks to you and Blue for being such awesome admin and creators of this page. I want to say that this community and the wonderful people and Doodles I've met on here give me so much joy every day.

On the other hand, my vote is that I would have joined anyway, waiting 24 hours would have not been a big deal.

I wonder however if along with the approval set up it would be possible to explain to "real" people the reason why, that is to put in a little blurb saying that the reason for the approval process is to prevent spammers and other undesirable people from joining our community. Not sure if this would help but at least "real' people would understand why.

Good luck and thanks again!

I am like Jo Bill, I would have joined anyway.

See Jan, you need other opinions.  You can always try it and change it back if it doesn't work.  Is there any thing for the web site like the "Do Not Call" List?

I think I probably would have joined anyway.  There was no reason for me to be in a I could have waited for approval.  Not a big deal.
