A Traumatic Trip to Pets Supplies Plus

Gizmo received a HUGE Ram's Horn for Christmas.  I thought it would be very hard, and that he wouldn't be able to chew it very fast.  WRONG!  In less than 5 min he had the end all chewed off in little pieces which were splintering.  Needless to say, we had to take it away.  Poor Gizzy!

So today, Gizmo and I went to Pet Supplies Plus to return it and get another antler.  We had given Mojo an antler and they both like them.  Gizmo hadn't been in a store since he was about 6 months old.  He was a little skiddish in the parking lot, but adjusted pretty fast.  UNTIL .... we were almost on the sidewalk of the strip mall where it is located, when a delivery man came out of the store we were going in.  The sidewalk looked wet, but was icy and the guy fell down ... along with his metal two wheel cart which came clanging directly towards us!!!!  It's a good thing I had a good hold on Gizmo's leash (a short walking leash) cuz he would've been in the next county or smashed by a car on the nearby busy street.

I finally got Gizmo up on the sidewalk and decided to let him calm down before introducing more new stuff.  I asked him to "sit" on the sidewalk and he almost made it all the way down.  His butt was about 6" off the sidewalk.  I looked down and he was visibly and horribly shaking!  Poor Baby!  So I let him venture away from me on his own to sniff a brick pillar and some snow.  Then we walked away from the door of the store and back.  He saw some kids go into the store and that cheered him up.  So we went in.

I was afraid the automatic sliding doors would stop him, but he went in with me.  He stretched out to investigate, but still he came forward.  Once inside he was afraid of the cart.  So, I pulled one out and let him sniff it.  Then we went to see the kitties.  One kitty wasn't too pleased, so I thought we should leave before she spit and hissed.  That's all he needed!

He was still scared, but wasn't shaking any more.  The two kids (about 9 or 10) asked if they could pet him.  That's exactly what he needed.  They pet him and he wiggled a little, but not as much as he usually does.  Then we shopped.  He heard someone squeaking a toy and was interested, so I let him look around the corner of the aisle to see.  We finished shopping and a couple employees wanted to pet him.  That was a good thing for him.

When I checked out, he didn't want to be tethered to the leash hook, so I asked the two kids to hold him.  He was very good.  He stood by them and leaned on them.  We went out with an employee carrying my pet safe salt.  When I got to the back of the car (we have an SUV), he was in such a hurry to get in that he slipped while I was hoisting his rear end up.  He doesn't like to jump in because of his hurt leg, so I lift his butt up after he puts his paws on the ledge.  When we got home, he was so happy to jump out of the car and go inside.

This wasn't an ideal trip, but it showed me that he really needs to go more often.  He was really very good in the store ... probably cuz he was scared, but that's not entirely a bad thing for the first time.  I will take him more often even if it's just to browse.

Geeze Gizmo, what an ordeal! Don't worry buddy, next time will go smooth. Those places were scary to me the first time till I found that squeaky toy aisle.

That was quite an experience, Gizzy. It was good you found some kids to give you some love and encouragement and some time to cautiously explore the new place. Sometimes that is all it takes to be comfortable in a new environment, but it is always nice to get home and relax. I hope you next trip is not quite as exciting.

Dear Cousin Gizzy, wow, what an adventure you had with your Mommy. I'm so happy that Auntie Jo handled everything so well and gave you time to sniff and feel more comfortable before moving on. It's nice that you met new friends and I bet it was pawsome to go back to the warmth of home, but you are a brave Doodle Cousin and we love you so much! - loving paws from Pedro

Jo, in spite of everything, I think Gizmo was a prince!  I don't think Pemon would have been as good.

What an adventure for both of you! Just happy nobody got hurt and Gizmo did get his new toy and some pets to make him feel happier again. Yes, Jo Bill do take him more often. I didn't take my boys for a while and now they don't go in at all because they just get too overwhelmed, especially if there are other dogs or kitties in the store. Not sure if I will ever be able to get back to shopping with them, or even one at a time. Happy that everybody is OK. Loved your story-telling!

Thanks Dianne ... actually neither Gizmo or myself slipped. It was a delivery guy. Yes, I can't wait to take him back or somewhere else soon.

Gizmo, it sounds as if you did very well for a very scary experience!  I can't imagine having a falling guy (and a free-flying cart!) coming at Dulcie!  Jo, I think that you are right to consider taking him more often.  Dulcie thinks the nursing homes are old hat now, even with wheelchairs and rolling carts, and she knows to settle down immediately when we go in.  Bet Gizmo will be used to all that new stuff in no time - and I am glad he didn't hurt himself when he slipped (or you, either)! Hugs and kisses to Gizzy for being such a good boy!

On my Gizmo, it can be a scary world out there but you always have Mommy with you. I get the shakes too in new places that scare me but Mommy just tells me it's fine and I'm ok. Hope you like your new antler, its a bummer when a perfectly good chew bone doesn't work right. I don't like icy sidewalks either and I bet you thought that delivery man was coming after you! Yikes.  Your friend, Eli.

What an adventure for Gizmo!! I don't ever have those kind of experiences but still LOVE to get home from the stores so I can only imagine how he feels!!! LOL.
