Gizmo received a HUGE Ram's Horn for Christmas. I thought it would be very hard, and that he wouldn't be able to chew it very fast. WRONG! In less than 5 min he had the end all chewed off in little pieces which were splintering. Needless to say, we had to take it away. Poor Gizzy!
So today, Gizmo and I went to Pet Supplies Plus to return it and get another antler. We had given Mojo an antler and they both like them. Gizmo hadn't been in a store since he was about 6 months old. He was a little skiddish in the parking lot, but adjusted pretty fast. UNTIL .... we were almost on the sidewalk of the strip mall where it is located, when a delivery man came out of the store we were going in. The sidewalk looked wet, but was icy and the guy fell down ... along with his metal two wheel cart which came clanging directly towards us!!!! It's a good thing I had a good hold on Gizmo's leash (a short walking leash) cuz he would've been in the next county or smashed by a car on the nearby busy street.
I finally got Gizmo up on the sidewalk and decided to let him calm down before introducing more new stuff. I asked him to "sit" on the sidewalk and he almost made it all the way down. His butt was about 6" off the sidewalk. I looked down and he was visibly and horribly shaking! Poor Baby! So I let him venture away from me on his own to sniff a brick pillar and some snow. Then we walked away from the door of the store and back. He saw some kids go into the store and that cheered him up. So we went in.
I was afraid the automatic sliding doors would stop him, but he went in with me. He stretched out to investigate, but still he came forward. Once inside he was afraid of the cart. So, I pulled one out and let him sniff it. Then we went to see the kitties. One kitty wasn't too pleased, so I thought we should leave before she spit and hissed. That's all he needed!
He was still scared, but wasn't shaking any more. The two kids (about 9 or 10) asked if they could pet him. That's exactly what he needed. They pet him and he wiggled a little, but not as much as he usually does. Then we shopped. He heard someone squeaking a toy and was interested, so I let him look around the corner of the aisle to see. We finished shopping and a couple employees wanted to pet him. That was a good thing for him.
When I checked out, he didn't want to be tethered to the leash hook, so I asked the two kids to hold him. He was very good. He stood by them and leaned on them. We went out with an employee carrying my pet safe salt. When I got to the back of the car (we have an SUV), he was in such a hurry to get in that he slipped while I was hoisting his rear end up. He doesn't like to jump in because of his hurt leg, so I lift his butt up after he puts his paws on the ledge. When we got home, he was so happy to jump out of the car and go inside.
This wasn't an ideal trip, but it showed me that he really needs to go more often. He was really very good in the store ... probably cuz he was scared, but that's not entirely a bad thing for the first time. I will take him more often even if it's just to browse.
