Rooney is home from his procedure

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 9:40pm 9 Comments

Hi all,

Thanks for keeping Roon in your thoughts and prayers today - I know they worked! He was in good spirits when I picked him up - he couldn't wait to get out of there! Just brought him home and he ate some dinner, had a pain pill, and is presently sleeping on his favorite fuzzy rug. I asked my husband to pick up a cone collar on the way home from work because he is already trying to lick the suture site. Gotta keep that clean and dry.

The vet took another…

Giardia

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 5:30pm 7 Comments

The vet confirmed this morning that Rooney has giardia. Poor guy. I know it's extremely common in puppies and not likely to be fatal, but I just feel terrible for him. Between the oppressive heat and persistent diarrhea he's been a trooper. I'll start him on a 7-day course of Panacure tonight - hopefully that eradicates the darned parasite. As if that weren't enough, he is getting neutered on 8/31. This must be what parent empathy/guilt feels like!

As you can see in this photo he can…

Rooney's Weekend: A hike and a sting

Posted on August 6, 2012 at 8:00pm 6 Comments

Rooney is now 3 months and 13 days old. I estimate he is about 18lbs, we'll confirm this weekend at the vet. He is growing rapidly and his personality has really emerged. He has lots of energy (usually at inopportune hours of the evening  or morning!). We have been having a bit of a rough time at night when he scoots around and scratches at his crate flooring incessantly - not sure why he has picked up this habit, but it wakes us up. He doesn't really care to be snuggled or pet and is…

Jules I did a little research (more like a lot of research) and you're right they say in a lot of articles that a F1b is a Doodle to a Poodle.  But see the article I have here.  In my opinion Rooney is a F1B.  Just read the first sentence of this article, it sounds to me like they are saying it's a cross between either the Retriver or Poodle with the Goldendoodle.  What do you think?  It is a backcross between a Doodle and Retriver.

A backcross pup is the result of a hybrid bred back to one of its breeds of origin.  From a genetic standpoint a backcross pup is a first generation cross. As breeders are breeding towards nonshedding and allergy friendliness, a backcross Goldendoodle is generally the product of a Goldendoodle bred to a Poodle.  The resulting dog is, on average, 1/4 Golden Retriever and 3/4 Poodle.
Although there is less vigour in this crossing than in the original hybrid,  the first generation backcross still is close enough in the breeding tree to benefit from hybrid vigour.  With each successive generation vigour is lost.
Coat Maintenance:  moderate to high care
Coat Description: Coat continues to grow in length although similar in appearance to a first generation Goldendoodle.  Coats are wavy or curly.
Shedding:  very light to nonshed (see the stats in the Dood Database)
Allergy Friendliness:  recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies.
