When is her coat going to come through?

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 9:48am 10 Comments

Hi, we have a three month old Goldendoodle (2nd gen). At the moment her coat is still pretty flat and moulting!! Is this usual, all the pics I have seen are of fluffy little puppies! Our girl is good as gold and a sweetheart - but I am not sure she is ever going to look  like a doodle! Is this usual? Thanks.

Gill if you go to the Goldendoodles.com web site and go under the FAQ's heading  and click Doods & Coat Colours you will get a good idea how much the doodles coat changes from when they are a puppy to when they reach 1 year.  They show before and after pictures.  Some pups look to have fairly straight coats that turn quite wavy by 1 year.  Very interesting to see these pics.

Ha ha ha, I know people never know what kind of dog it is that your walking with. My first doodle Gus was black and he was always mistaken for a Bouvier and a Portuguese Water dog. I actually had someone come running out of their house once while I was walking by to ask me if he was a Water dog. People were always stopping me and asking what kind of dog he was. My puppy doodle now is gold in colour so people naturally think he is a golden retreiver they don't see the poodle in him yet but I do.

I think your little girl will have a beautiful wavy coat when she is older.  I can see the ripples already.  She just needs time.  After reading a lot of info on doodle crossings, your best bet for a curly coat is when a doodle is crossed with a poodle.  They are quite curly.  When you breed two doodles you have a chance that they may get the traits of a retreiver from both sides or poodle from both sides or a bit of both.  You never know what your going to get.  Sounds like no matter what she looks like she has already won your heart.  I know the feeling when you are expecting a certain look, that's what makes Doodles so appealing but it's their personalities that can't be beat!

Gill, you won't really know what exactly her coat will look like until she is a year old.  They change a lot over the first year.  My first doodle started off with pretty flat hair across his back but when he was a year old his fur was really curly around his behind area and very wavy everywhere else.  He was an F1 cross.  I've seen a doodle in my neighbourhood that has straight black hair and looks very much like a retriever.  If your pup has curly or wavy ears you can pretty well look forward to a wavy or curly dog.
