Before And After The Tornado July 6, 2014

An EF-1 Tornado took out The Well Mannered Dog Center on July 6, 2014. We had just picked up Gizmo about 4 hours before it came in ... without warning!

Saw the reunion on our news (Chicago area).  Also they showed a quick picture of the damaged building. So it made "national news"!  People luv the reunion stories. ;)

Thanks, you guys.  It was pretty scarry.  GOOD NEWS UPDATE:  Puckett, the lost dog, was reunited with his owners yesterday morning.  They showed him on the news and he was so happy to see his owners.  He looked really good for wandering for 2 days.  Someone must've been feeding him or he ravaged dumpsters ... there are quite a few restaurants in that area.  He was checked out by a vet and is perfectly fine.

Good to hear nobody (including dogs) were hurt or lost!

There were about 35-40 dogs boarding at the time the tornado went through.  One dog escaped after the storm.  All the rest were taken to a nearby building until the Kent County Animal Shelter came for them.  They have been reunited with their owners.

The one dog, Puckett, that got loose was found this morning.  His owners had just moved here from Vermont and were vacationing at the time.  All the WMDC staff, trainers, volunteers and area residents were out in full force looking for him.  There were many, many postings on FB.  Luckily he went East instead of West ... he would have been on the 4-lane highway (US-131) if he had.

Only one staff member was on duty at the time the tornado went through.  She was shaken, but did a GREAT job of getting the dogs together and is solely responsible for their safe keeping.  The roof & ceiling was falling in on her, but she was able to get the dogs together, call the center's owner, and get them all to safety in a building next door.  She did have some help from a trucker or two ... there's a trucking firm down the road.

We are all very shaken.  I have been there and saw for myself the damage.  You can see all the way through the building from West to East and North to South.  Hopefully Kathryn, the owner, will be able to find a new facility and be up and running after a while.

The community has been a huge support.  The best thing is that no one was seriously injured during this storm .... not a person .... not a dog!  YEA!

OMG, Jo!  Thank goodness you got Gizzy before the storm!  Hope everyone is okay . . . .
